Low maintenance Routine for 20 year old hul
 

I have a 20 old 34 Venture and the top side has seen a lot of UV! I am not looking to restore my boat to "Show Room" new or even make it all fancy. If Hosing it off was enough to protect the gelcoat from UV damage with a little brushing to get the blood off, that's all I'd do. ​

That being said, what is the best low maintenance care routine I can establish for my boat. I understand I'll likely have to get it to a better state then carry forward with a routine.

I tried "Ceramic Pro" ceramic coating but that a was near worthless waste of money for something that was supposed to last a year. I'd say it lasted 3 months. With the Ceramic I was told I could Have it done, then touched up annually but the installer seems to fall off the face of the earth and it never really lived up to the hype anyway.

My boat is in Hypoluxo Florida, stored outside in race fully exposed on the top rack.

Without seeing a picture hard to say how to fix it but for most boats with oxidation, the first step after a thorough washing would be to buff out the gelcoat with either a compound or a strong one-step cleaner/wax using a wool pad and a rotary buffer.


20 years old is getting up there in age. Not out of the norm for a quality hull.


What do you have for polishers?

Nice!


If you want to keep it easy and fast, then buff out the top cap, anything smooth, with a good marine one-step cleaner/wax and a wool pad on a rotary buffer.


There's lots of thin sections on the top cap on boats like these in-between the non-skid sections that make it a real pain in the butt to buff these areas out.


In my marine detailing how-to book, I actually show taping-off the non-skid areas otherwise you're going to run the buffing pad into them and fill them with compound, polish or cleaner/wax - whatever it is you're using.


You can also do all this work by hand to be more careful but it will take longer.


There's no quick, fast or simple way to buff out these kinds of boats.




I know that's not the answer you're looking for but it's the truth.
