How To: Clean & Protect Bimini Top

Your boat’s bimini top is designed to provide shelter and shade from the sun and other outside elements. Bimini tops are often made of canvas, which will fade and deteriorate due to sun exposure. Regular treatment with Marine 31 fabric cleaners and protectants will keep bimini tops, boat covers, and sails looking great. Marine 31 fabric cleaners and protectants are silicone free.

In this guide I will show you how to properly clean and protect your boat's bimini top.

Featured products:

Cleaning and protecting your bimini top isn't as difficult or as time consuming as you may think. Follow these simple steps and your boat's bimini top will look and perform like-new for years.

Step 1: Cleaning Bimini Top

The key to keeping your boat’s fabric surfaces looking and performing like-new is to regularly clean and protect them. Even if you think your boat cover or bimini top is ready for protection, a thorough cleaning with Marine 31 Fabric & Vinyl Cleaner first will ensure all ground-in dirt and grime is removed so your protectant of choice will properly bond to the surface. Simply put, the cleaner the surface, the better your fabric protectant will work to repel UV rays.

Marine 31 Fabric & Vinyl Cleaner is a concentrated marine cleaner that gently removes ground-in dirt, soiling, staining and light mildew from all marine fabric and vinyl surfaces. Marine 31 Fabric & Vinyl Cleaner features an environmentally-friendly formula that is non-toxic and biodegradable. Marine 31 Fabric & Vinyl Cleaner can safely be used to clean bimini tops, marine cushions, inflatable boats, seats, boat covers, sail covers and deck awnings.

Directions:
  1. Rinse surface to remove loose dirt and grime.
  2. Spray an even amount of cleaner directly onto WET surface and lightly scrub with a Natural Horse Hair Brush.
  3. For difficult stains, let cleaner dwell for 20-30 seconds before agitating.
  4. Rinse thoroughly and allow top to dry.

Step 2: Protecting Bimini Top

Marine 31 T-Top Fabric Protectant with SunBlock provides the best UV protection for all exterior and interior marine fabric surfaces including old and new bimini tops. Formulated using SunBlock technology – a fusion of Marine 31’s proprietary UV absorbers and advanced Ciba Tinuvin UV Blockers – treated surfaces will retain their color and texture while repelling dirt, dust, oil, grease, acid rain, salt, insects and bird droppings. Regularly treated surfaces will resist UV-induced fading, cracking and discoloring. This CFC-free formula meets California’s strict air quality standards.

Directions:
  1. Ensure surface is clean and dry.
  2. Shake well. Hold can 18-24 inches away from the surface and spray a light mist in a sweeping motion.
  3. Wait 10-15 minutes before applying additional coats.
  4. Older tops may require 3-4 coats for maximum protection.
  5. If overspray occurs, immediately remove with a soft microfiber towel.

It's that simple! With Marine 31 Fabric & Vinyl Cleaner and Marine 31 T-Top Fabric Protectant with SunBlock, all your boat's fabric surfaces will look and perform like-new for as long as you own the boat.
